Microchipping- more than an implant

When was the last time you thought about the details on your pet's microchip records?

People move, phone numbers change and sometimes animals even change owners. If your pet's details are not updated on the microchip register you may as well not have one implanted. Your pet may never make it back home if they get lost.

In New South Wales (NSW) all dogs and cats are required by law to be microchipped by an authorized identifier such as your vet. The authorised identifier will implant the microchip and forward some paperwork to the Companion Animal Register. This form is stored in a NSW wide database. Your information is protected by strict privacy controls.

Each animal is identified with a number which is unique to your pets microchip. The database stores your pet's name, breed, age and sex against that microchip number as well as your name, address and contacts such as email address and phone number.

If any of this information changes you need to complete a 'Change of Owner/Details (C3A) Form'. The completed form needs to be posted to your local council. For people in Wollongong council area mail it to:

Wollongong City Council, Locked Bag 8821, Wollongong DC NSW 2500

For those in Shellharbour council areas mail it to:

The General Manager, Shellharbour City Council, Locked Bag 155, SHELLHARBOUR CITY CENTRE NSW 2529

All animals in NSW have to be microchipped. Make sure you keep your pet's details up to date so if they do ever go missing they can get back to you as quickly as possible.
